Product Description
The breed of unknown origin, brought to the United States by early settlers and kept as a dual-purpose farmstead breed that does well in cold weather. The breed name may derive from early chickens brought from the French colony of Saint-Domingue (now Haiti). The Dominique has a rose comb with a short upward turning spike, may be large or bantam, and comes in one color – irregular barring, or cuckoo.
The color is similar to that of the more regularly barred Plymouth Rock, which was developed from the Dominique and with which the Dominique is often confused, but the two breeds may be easily distinguished by comb. Like the Barred Rock, the Dominique is an autosexing breed; at hatch Dominique cockerels are a shade or two lighter than pullets and may remain so into maturity.
