Product Description
The Hmong chicken, also known as “qaib xiav nqaij” in the Hmong community, is a rare and cherished breed among poultry enthusiasts in the US. Originally raised by hill tribes in Asia and Southeast Asia, these chickens hold cultural significance and are deeply rooted in their native countries.
With their blue/black skin and fibromelanistic traits, Hmong chickens are a unique breed, often compared to other melanistic varieties like Ayam Cemani and Silkies. While there’s no strict standard for their appearance due to their landrace status, they typically exhibit upright bodies, tight feathering, and pea or straight combs. They’re valued for their egg-laying abilities, ranging from tan tones to medium-sized eggs, and are known for their adaptability to various weather conditions and strong maternal instincts.
The history of Hmong chickens in the US dates back to the late 1970s when Hmong refugees brought them over from Laos during a civil war.
