Product Description
An old breed originating in Spain and named after the Spanish island of Minorca. It is the largest Mediterranean breed, comes in both rose-comb and single-comb varieties and a few color varieties – of which black is the original and still the most common – and may be large or bantam in size. The Minorca has a large white earlobe and looks so much like the white-faced black Spanish that it is sometimes referred to as the red-faced black Spanish.
The Minorca does well in hot climates but is not cold hardy because its large comb and wattles freeze easily. The hen’s comb is somewhat unusual in that it folds back on itself, rather than drooping over to one side, as is common among laying breeds. The hens are good layers, producing eggs that are among the largest of those with white shells, and rarely brood.
