Whether you’re preparing for a poultry show, dealing with a muddy bird, or simply maintaining good hygiene, washing a chicken can be a surprisingly soothing and essential task. While chickens typically keep themselves clean through dust baths, sometimes a proper wash is needed to help them look and feel their best.

With the right tools and a gentle approach, chicken washing takes only 15–20 minutes—and your feathered friend might even enjoy it!

Step 1: Prepare the Bath

Start by filling a basin or tub with warm water, around 100°F (38°C). You can test the temperature with your elbow—it should feel pleasantly warm, not hot.

Add a generous squirt of pet-safe shampoo or a mild liquid dish soap to the water to create a rich lather. Avoid harsh chemicals, which can strip natural oils and harm feathers.

Step 2: Gently Introduce the Bird

Hold your chicken calmly by placing one hand over each wing to prevent flapping. Slowly lower your bird into the bath until the water reaches just below its neck.

If the chicken seems uneasy, you can briefly dip its head into the water (avoiding eyes and nostrils), which usually calms it down.

Step 3: Scrub Softly, Clean Thoroughly

Gently move the bird up and down and side to side in the water to ensure its feathers get soaked. Use a soft sponge to lather soap into the feathers, always following the direction of growth.

Pay extra attention to:

  • The tail area
  • Around the vent
  • Under the wings

Once clean, lift the bird out and gently squeeze the water out from head to tail.

Step 4: Rinse Well

Prepare a second tub or basin of slightly cooler, clean water. Let the bird soak a few minutes to help feathers loosen and float.

Gently move the bird in the water to rinse off any soap residue. Squeeze excess water again before doing a final rinse:

  • Add a splash of vinegar or lemon juice to neutralize remaining shampoo.
  • For white-feathered birds, a few drops of bluing will brighten their plumage.

Step 5: Drying Time

Wrap your chicken in a clean towel and gently pat dry. Once the first towel is damp, switch to a second dry towel and continue blotting.

Let the bird finish drying in a warm, draft-free area, or use a low heat setting on a hair dryer if necessary (keep it moving and never point it too close to the skin).

Special Note: Washing Crested Breeds

For breeds with fluffy crests like Polish or Silkies:

  • Hold the chicken upside down by its legs (with support).
  • Dip only the crest into soapy water, keeping the face and beak dry.
  • Gently lather and rinse under running water, avoiding eyes and nostrils.
  • Having two people helps—one to hold the bird, the other to wash.
